Livestock Guardian Dogs
The Maremma has been selectively bred for centuries in the mountains of Italy to guard sheep from wolves.  They have a dense coat that allows them to thrive in the harshest of weather.  They where first imported into North America in the 1970's.  They are also know as the Italian Sheepdog or Italian Wolf dog.
Intelligence is probably the Maremma's greatest asset.  She can think through situations for herself, disobeying commands if they conflict with her instints!  These dogs guard as they have done for hundreds of years; they are remarkable to watch when they are working..
Breezy Meadows MB's Zita
This is our Italian Maremma herd guardian, Zita.  This is one  great dog!  I depend on her when I am gone and she keeps the place safe for sure.  Zita is so gentle with the goat kids; it is a joy to watch her work.  She has a wonderful temperment and is super smart. Zita does not hesitate to bolt into action when she senses danger...or just to chase a car down the fence line, or a bird landing too close to her babies!! She lives with the goats 24/7.
Providing shade for her charge!
Epic Ranch's Nicco
@ 4 months old
This is Nicco our new little prince!  He is a big pup with a happy attitude.  He comes from working parents who guard a herd of Boer goats in the hills of Santa Cruz county.  Nicco is very attentive to his goats and becoming a wonderful co-guardian with Zita.  He weighs 100 lbs and still has some growing to do.  He is a welcome addition to the farm.
